Future Learning Spaces

The notion of space regains fresh momentum every time anew we interact with the world around us. As mobile devices weave into the fabric of everyday life, one is no longer confined to a specific location, time and place in accessing and interacting with communication technologies. Thereby the interfaces become more adaptable and fluid according to the user’s needs for switching seamlessly between augmented, real and virtual information and communication techniques and practices. In educational contexts, however, we are still entangled in the three-dimensional space of Eucledian geometry with which we commonly associate the institutional place of action, yet overlooking at the same the temporal dimension in it. Fragmentation, acceleration, accumulation, synchronicity, ubiquity of information storable and retrievable at different locations at the same time finds its equivalent in mobile and flexible living-, learning- and working arrangements.

The conference topics of investigation delves into these temporal intertwined modes of action between individuals, groups and institutions so as to uncover hitherto unexplored and unarticulated concepts and experiences which would help us to co-develop the creative spaces of the future.

Sugata Mitra is Professor of Educational Technology at the School of Education, Communication and Language Sciences, Newcastle University, England, and a visiting professor at the MIT Media Lab in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Professor Mitra works in the areas of cognitive science, information science and educational technology, and he has a keen interest in engineering and software development. 12 signos que estás en un aula del siglo XXI

Realmente en mis días de colegio e incluso universitarios, nunca experimenté un proyecto de aula como éste, pero quizás van siendo más comunes en los centros educativos de España gracias a metodologías educativas innovadoras que aprovechan las TIC.

Sin duda, lo realmente interesante de este proyecto va mucho más allá del uso de las TIC. Se transforma el concepto de educación. Se generan oportunidades para desarrollar, lo que considero, las habilidades críticas para tener éxito en cualquier profesión del futuro: comunicación oral y escrita, capacidad de análisis de información, pensamiento crítico, creatividad, trabajo en equipo, resolución de problemas y responsabilidad personal sobre el resultado. Como dije a Madre Montserrat, les estaré esperando cuando acaben para que vengan a trabajar y a colaborar conmigo. Sin duda, con estos inicios también aprenderé mucho de ellos.

As we are approaching the commencement of the conference, and as my blogging will give way to a more participatory discussion forum on the conference themes (stay tuned!), I wanted to use these last couple of posts to synthesize what I see as critical directions for the design of future e-learning spaces. Call it, if you will, a manifesto of future e-learning spaces. And since a manifesto should start the like a manifesto…. we demand.
