The Future of Textbooks in Education

with 4 comments

Since the launch of  iBook Author and iBooks2 app by apple and the educational technology experts started discussing the possible impact of this move on education as a whole and on textbooks in particular.  Google and Apple are competing with each other to gain some terrain in the educational market by trying to offer the best tools for digital textbooks. They have created them and are trying their best to get them integraded into the school curriculum. It is too early to judge whether digital textbooks can be of any help or not but the question that remians unaswered is how can schools afford the mobile gadgets that can host these digital textbooks when adopted ? Read the following infographic below to learn more about the dichotomy of digital textbooks and tradional ones.

New Digital Tools Let Professors Tailor Their Own Textbooks

And that’s just one option, along with mix-and-match Web sites from big publishers and libraries of open-source content. For his marketing course at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, Daniel Flint wanted his students to read a white paper on public relations, a couple of case studies, an industry report, and a chapter of a forthcoming book.

So he created a textbook with just that—more than 100 pages of material in one customized package for his students. Mr. Flint, a professor of marketing at the university, used a new build-your-own-textbook service called AcademicPub, which arranged payment of royalties and compiled the material for publication. His students were given three options for buying the book: Download a digital edition for $14.95, get it in paperback for $27, or go for the hardcover for $45.

ePub Reader Software

Several different software programs either support or plan on supporting the ePub format. The ePub format is an open standard for ebooks by the International Digital Publishing Forum. Since it’s an open standard, anyone can make a program to read or create ePub books, and anyone can make an ePub ebook.

I’ve reviewed several different programs that both read and create ePub books. If anyone is wondering where I hear about these programs, I primarily use two sources: Google, and Teleread. Also, lately I’ve gotten a few e-mails asking me to review a program, so I’ve reviewed those as well. Also, Wikipedia has a list of ePub readers for different platforms on it’s ePub Page.

Connections: Virtual Learning Communities

leave a comment »

Read

Connections: Virtual Learning Communities is an eBook that explores how online communities form, who joins them, and how  they operate in learning environments. This ebook pulls together the big ideas from our work for educators who might actually be able to put what we have learned to good use. That’s what this book is about—making sense of online learning communities. In a sense it isn’t original; it is rewritten out of material the VLC Research Lab already created along with a healthy dose of my own speculations. So it is selective rather than comprehensive. It doesn’t attempt to pull together all of the excellent work and writing about online learning.

This book is available as an ePub document, suitable for viewing on most mobile devices and desktops. If you aren’t sure how to handle ePub files, check out this review of software for desktop and mobile devices: ePub Reader Software
